Understanding & Responding to Requirements

Understanding & Responding to Requirements

Adhering to policies, standards, and guidelines regarding how and when data is collected, managed, processed, accessed, shared and stored, helps reduce risk, mitigate unintended negative outcomes, and promote the benefits of research.

The university, funders, publishers, governments, contractual agreements, partnerships— including Indigenous and community partners—and research ethics may all have different requirements related to research data to support the unique contexts and goals of the research they support, participate in, or share.

UBC’s support services can help you interpret requirements from each of these sources, help you understand your obligations in relation to them, and connect you with infrastructure to enable you to comply with all relevant requirements.

Part of appropriately responding to these requirements is taking consideration of risks associated with research projects and the resulting data as well as security concerns that may arise in the conduct of research projects or partnerships.
