RDM is supported by data collection tools that provide sufficient metadata to ensure the utility of the collected data and that enable you to adhere to any requirements that address access, storage localization and other issues related to privacy, security and data use or sharing agreements between the researcher and the owner(s) of the data.
Generally, data collection methods and tools fall under the purview of the individual researchers. However, UBC does provide access to two form-based data collection tools for the collection of electronic data, Qualtrics and REDCap.
For questions about the compliance of other data collection tools, contact UBC's Advanced Research Computing.
General Considerations
Qualtrics is a general-purpose survey collection tool, that is simple to interact with and suitable for many research projects with advanced question branching, extensive reporting, and multi-channel distribution.
REDCap is purpose-built for comprehensive research data collection and management, providing a secure web application for building and managing research databases and surveys, ideal for clinical trials or longitudinal studies requiring stringent data capture for research.
Qualtrics (UBC Survey Tool)
Qualtrics is an easy-to-use, top-tier survey tool platform that offers a wide range of features. It complies with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) because the survey data is protected, stored and backed up in Canada.
REDCap
Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is a secure and easy-to-use web application for building and managing online surveys and databases.
UBC runs two instances of REDCap: one through UBC Advanced Research Computing and one through the Faculty of Medicine. To get help choosing which instance to use, contact Advanced Research Computing.
