Research Data Management (RDM) encompasses the entire lifecycle of research data. It includes all processes applied throughout the lifecycle of a research project guiding the collection, documentation, storage, sharing and preservation of research data.
Requirements, Expectations & Best Practices
Requirements relating to research data and research data management at UBC are generally informed by granting agencies (i.e. Tri-Agencies: CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC), articulated in institutional policy by the Office of the University Counsel (OUC), and, in turn, interpreted in standards through the Office of the Chief Information Office (OCIO). Best practices in the implementation of these standards support compliance with requirements a researcher is expected to adhere to.
Expectations and subsequent best practices may be further informed by such things as disciplinary norms, contractual agreements, and research partner relationships, in particular when working with Indigenous data.
This site is intended to help connect researchers with research support expertise at UBC to learn about and implement these best practices.
Guiding Principles
The following form a framework for best practices in the management of research data and help to inform the learning and infrastructural supports at UBC to enable robust, ethical, and transparent research that contributes to a larger body of work:
